Jayson Brod: 1. High energy density compared to other fuels. (That means you don't have to carry as much fossil fuel than you would some alternative fuel to go the same distance/speed.)2. Extremely extensive, well-established distribution infrastructure. (Hydrogen fueling stations are few and far between by comparison. Can easily get a quart of oil from Walmart, can the same be said for non-fossil fuels/lubricants?)3. Lower cost of related technologies -- fossil fuel is used in older, cheaper technology, especially when compared with the newer, more expensive alternative fuel technologies. (For example, compare the price of a fuel cell driven vehicle compared to a conventional fossil fuel driven vehicle.
