Why people in US called college post-secondary education?

Russell Mckinzie: In the US, college and university are used interchangeably to mean the same thing, although vernacularly, people do say "Go to college" in the instead of "Go to university" in the rest of the world. I think outside the US, colleges and universities do refer to 2 different types of schooling, so "university" is the advanced higher education. But in the US, the only real difference between the words is size: physical size of the campus and school and as a result the number of subject and degrees it offers. Typically a "university" in the US is just a collection of "colleges" where each "college" in the university specializes in its own area, like a single university would have a separate college of engineering and business college, etc....Show more

Anibal Scheid: secondary school is high school any thing after that is POST secondarycommunity college and regular colleges are not really different except you can only get a 2 year degree at a community college, as opposed to a 4 year, masters or PhD at a full scale college.

Branden Round: Primary education is grade school, grades 1-8, ages 6 to about 13 or 14.Secondary education is high school, grades 9-12, ages 14 to 18.After that, -all- education is considered 'post secondary' education. This includes colleges, technical institutes, vocational training, university, etc.In the US we tend to say 'I'm going to college' whether it is a 2-year or 4-year school, or even 'post graduate' work, for an advanced degree. In Canada they tend to say 'I'm going to university'. So in either case, if you want to know more specifically what kind of school one is going to you have to ask.Technically,! a university is a school that offers advanced degrees. But on! e can be going to a university for a 4-year degree. Universities are made up of colleges--the college of arts and letters, the college of science and technology, etc....Show more
