Prego vegan in-law?

Billie Bratchett: well i'm not a vegan but i don't eat any meat products and haven't since i was 18yrs old and all my babies have turned out just fine. There are healthy alternatives to those who are vegan though.

Buster Exline: Yes, it is safe and healthy to be a vegan while pregnant. There shouldn't be any problems if the woman is getting an adequate amount of protein from other sources, like beans, soy, nuts, tofu, etc. She should also be taking prenatal vitamins to make up for any lack of nutrients in her diet.

Cherlyn Tefera: No, it's not safe or healthy at all, and any OB/GYN in the country will tell you so. The requirements needed to nourish a growing fetus are simply not supported by a vegan diet. Doctors have issued health warnings about it in the past. There have been at least three convictions of vegan parents in the last several years for starvation of their children. Plant proteins do not have the correct ratio or quantity of amino acids as t! hose derived from animal products. A vegan diet may lack essential nutrients and vitamins, and vegan breast milk may be lacking DHA - a fatty acid necessary for nervous development. Soy, which is one of the most popular dietary components of a vegan diet, actually inhibits growth, and absorption of digestive materials. Doctors in Britain, Canada and other countries tell parents to be careful about using it. At the very least, a parent pursuing a vegan pregnancy should be under the supervision of an excellent nutritionist with a specialty in that area. But frankly, it's an irresponsible diet for a fetus, infant, toddler or young child....Show more

Sheron Perrez: As long as you're still meeting the nutritional requirements of a pregnant woman, it shouldn't be a problem.

Rosalba Lingner: I've never known any vegans to have any problems while pregnant gave birth to perfectly healthy babies.

Karl Samiec: My mother was vegan during her three pregnancies, as ! was my sister and I during ours. The idea that you have to eat ! animal parts and mamary secretions to be healthy is ludicrous, and the Americfan Dietetic Asssociation agrees that vegan lifestyles are appropriate for all stages of life.
